First Encounter: “Spiritualities and Political Theologies from Abya Yala: Decolonial Challenges and Perspectives”

From November 7–9, 2025, more than 350 participants from across Abya Yala will gather in Mazatenango, Guatemala, for the First Encounter on “Spiritualities and Political Theologies from Abya Yala*: Decolonial Challenges and Perspectives.”

This gathering seeks to deepen reflection on the interconnections between spirituality, theology, and politics emerging from the lived experiences where faith meets realities. From the heart of these experiences, the encounter will build on a decolonial and prophetic Abya Yala theology, one that reclaims ancestral memory, Native spiritual practices, nurtures justice, and envisions dignified futures for all.

The encounter is led by theologians Yenny Delgado and Claudio Ramírez, who serve as foundational organizers and key promoters of Abya Yala theology. Alongside them, theologians, educators, community leaders, farmers, activists, and Indigenous elders from Peru, Colombia, Argentina, Puerto Rico, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Mexico, and the United States will participate, offering their voices, wisdom, and experiences to this collective process of dialogue and transformation in Abya Yala.

This gathering is supported by various ecumenical institutions committed to critical, decolonial and prophetic, including PUBLICA – Theology in Public LifeÑAWI – Intercultural DialogueCODECA, Rodolfo Kusch Institute, AMERINDIA, among others community organizations.

*Abya Yala is a word in the Guna language, it means “land in full maturity and the land of vital blood.” this name holds deep significance for the Native peoples and descendants, as it represents the unity and vitality of our continent and spiritual practices before the European’s arrival. Adopted in the 70’s by activists, historians, educators, and theologians, the term challenges colonial and eurocentric divisions in the continent. (Delgado & Ramirez, 2023)
